The beginning of our company, UbiWork

How the UbiWork proyect started with remote workers at the center of our Value Proposal and Vision

How did UbiWork come into existence?

It is time to take a look into the very first moments of how the idea of our company started to develop. Our co-founder Marcelo was visiting the rural village of Cehegín in southeast Spain with his family in October 2020. Cehegín is a quiet village that has a laid-back lifestyle combined with beautiful mountain landscapes all around.

Marcelo was already working from home due to the worldwide pandemic. Likewise, countless companies and employees had needed to jump into the unknown, remote working as the new normality. During the day spent in the village, Marcelo was already dreaming of how nice it would be to remote work with such amazing views and nature around, but what triggered the idea was to see a big advertisement sign about “Optic-fiber arrived at Cehegin, get it now”.

It seemed like all the pieces came together: during the pandemic, home-office had resulted in an excellent way to work efficiently and with more flexibility than before, and now many of the beautiful rural areas of Spain were getting optic-fiber gigabit-fast internet networks.

Filled by the memories of the dark winters he spent working in Norway, Marcelo could not help to wonder about how cool it would be for remote workers to stay for a few weeks in places with more lively scenery and better weather. Moreover, being able to mix work with different leisure activities in the local villages and cities of the country seemed like a get-up-and-go idea.

Maybe, instead of visiting places in Spain for solely holiday purposes, the stay could combine remote work and leisure, since all the free time activities would be practically next door! Later on, and with the help of the rest of the founding team, the idea progressed to offering up-to-standard accommodations with a high-quality office setup as well as a great internet connection. These characteristics would be part of our “Ubiwork-certificate”, which ensures the suitability of the accommodation and aims to create optimal conditions for effective remote work.Maybe, instead of visiting places in Spain for solely holiday purposes, the stay could combine remote work and leisure, since all the free time activities would be practically next door! Marcelo introduced the idea to a group of friends from his exchange years: remote working from rural Spain as a perfect opportunity to enjoy the weather and nature. Ubiwork was then formed with international co-founders from Spain, Germany, and Finland, with the determination of improving the wellbeing of remote workers and making working from anywhere possible. Therefore, our motto is to offer the possibility to combine two important aspects of life: Work and leisure.

It has been demonstrated that workers’ productivity increases when they are happy and mentally healthy, which is often related to the weather. At Ubiwork we want to offer these benefits especially to workers from northern and central Europe. Instead of staying in their home country for the cold winter months, they could enjoy the good weather and leisure possibilities during the low season of tourism! We decided to focus on Spain in the beginning, because of the confluence of good weather during winter, delicious food and optic-fiber internet network. However, we are planning to offer accommodations in any place that brings a healthier working environment for remote workers.
