Work & Travel: Genalguacil

Presenting the rural village of Genalguacil, one of the Ubiwork locations in the mountain range of Andalucia.

Genalguacil is a beautiful town of whitewashed houses located in the Serrania de Ronda, in the heart of the Genal Valley. The town has one very special character that makes it stand out in a crowd of the villages in this precious mountain range area of Andalusia: Genalguacil is an open-air museum itself, having different pieces of art that are exposed in the cobblestone streets and on the buildings of the town.

What to see?

Genalguacil can boast of its recent incorporation into the network of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain. The biggest attraction of this town is the event “The Art Encounters” that is having the town museum as an inspiration for different artists from all over the world – the streets have been transformed into open-air art galleries and many of its houses are artists’ workshops or other spaces where everyone can enjoy the most extraordinary cultural projects. More modern artworks are exhibited in the Municipal Museum. The art projects of the streets are renewed every two years. You can see paintings on the walls and sculptures that stand out from the white-village style of the town, but also art that integrates with the local environment. Also, the small details are finished with an artistic touch: watching street names, houses numbers, and traffic signs are making the experience of walking in Genalguacil feel like walking through a real museum hall.

Genalguacil is a town that has been closely linked to art and culture for years, and the existence of the artisan tradition is blooming: in the town, you can find the craft center of the Genal Valley that presents the local crafts that otherwise would tend to disappear. Since the founding of the Art Encounters (Meetings of Art of Genalguacil) in 1994, Genalguacil has managed to transform itself into a fundamental pillar as a Spanish art scene. Traditional architecture, charming streets, and the Moorish village invite travelers to visit all year round. In this way, the town attracts people not only to visit Genalguacil but live there while enjoying the art, nature and the vivid community of this rural village.

What to do?

Genalguacil comprises one of the largest Spanish fir forests in Serranía de Ronda, within the amazing environment of Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja Natural Area. The town has multiple viewpoints to admire the amazing mountain ranges. The area also offers many opportunities for hiking, for example easy accessible tracks walking beside the river canyon in the area of “Pasarelas del Río Genal”.

The town has an extensive calendar of festivities throughout the year that begins on February 2 with the Candelaria, The Candle Mass. Later, on April 29, the Fair takes place in honor of the Patron saint, Saint Peter Martyr of Verona. During the summer the community enjoys different events, artisanal markets and local festivities. Genalguacil is a very small village (approx. 500 inhabitants), but thanks to its international atmosphere combined with the friendliness of the locals – the Genalguacileños, this town is a potential place to stay for more time – to combine remote working and exploring the local art life and nature resort areas.

Close by to explore

Genalguacil is located in the south of the “Serrania de Ronda”, approximately 45 kilometers from Ronda and 34 km from the city of Estepona. The distance to the biggest city of Málaga is 120 km. The town is located in the mountain range area, and the mountain roads are so curvy that they themselves create a unique experience for the traveler. Following the small mountain road, you can find other lovely mountain villages in the neighborhood of Genalguacil, to mention the villages of Casares, Gaucín, and Ronda.
